“What stays the same is often the hardest to notice. It becomes part of the backdrop we no longer see.”
I’ve walked this route countless times, yet today, it felt different.
It’s a small stretch of road, tucked behind a row of older shophouses. The same street vendors stand in the same spot, their signboards slightly faded from years of sun. The scent of grilled satay lingers, a familiar comfort that always seems to catch me just before I reach the junction.
Today, I didn’t rush past.
Instead, I stopped. Not because I expected anything new, but because I realised how long I had been walking this way without truly seeing it. The same lady at the stall smiled without saying a word, as she always does. A few regulars stood by, their voices low, conversations revolving around the same topics. The hum of the place felt steady, unchanged.
I ordered the same dish I always get. Not out of curiosity, but out of habit.
The dish arrived, as expected. A simple meal, nothing extravagant, but just right. The ingredients had the same taste, the same texture, the same warmth. It wasn’t special, yet it was everything I needed.
Sometimes, I think hidden gems are the places we stop seeing. They become so familiar, so woven into the fabric of our daily lives, that they lose their significance.
But the truth is, what stays unchanged is exactly what makes them worth returning to.
I finished my meal, stood up, and walked away.
The routine continued.
